HAMPTON, Va. (January 14, 2020) – The Hampton University Office of Student Activities in conjunction with the HU Student Government Association, the HU chapter of the NAACP, the Gamma Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program virtually on Monday, Jan. 18 at 11am.
“This virtual program will allow Hampton University to conitinue hosting our annual educational program honoring both Dr. King’s memory, and in remembrance of his dream,” said Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey. “While it saddens me that our nation and the world are navigating circumstances that do not allow for normalcy and we are facing social and political unrest, I am happy that Hampton University can host such a program that will provide much needed knowledge not only for the university, but the entire world. This program is very special to me for several reasons. Not only is Dr. King’s mother an alumna, but Dr. King visited our beautiful campus several times. I also remember that he, along with other African American leaders during the civil rights movement, visited my home in Alabama where my mother and father provided respite for out of town travelers.”
Rev. Dr. Jerome A. Barber, Pastor of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, will offer the program’s opening prayer. The event will also feature musical selections, historical information and other tributes to Dr. King from various Hampton University students. The keynote address will be given by Hampton University alumnus, Minister Michael Eley, Jr., founder of The Outpour Inc.
Michael Eley, Jr., is a Spring 2018 honors graduate of Hampton University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing. While at Hampton, Eley was a member of the prestigious Greer Dawson Wilson Student Leadership Program, President of the Hampton University Chapter of the American Marketing Association, and served as the Executive Minister of the Interfaith Collegiate Fellowship (Campus Ministry). Currently, Eley serves as the North Carolina Regional Chaplain of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc., is a member of the Wendell-Wake County branch of the NAACP, Inc., and serves as the press and publicity chair.
In the work of ministry, Eley serves as Minister of Young Adults at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest, N.C., under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Enoch E. Holloway, Sr. Eley is a third-year student at Wake Forest University School of Divinity, pursuing a Master of Divinity. While at Wake Forest, he earned a certificate in Faith-Based Nonprofit Leadership and served as Vice President of the Black Student Association known as AKONI.
In September of 2015, Eley launched Outpour, Inc. in the garage of his family household. Today, Outpour is a 501(c)3 organization that has impacted over 1,400 college students through its live events and digital community groups. For this work, he was recognized as a 2019 Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion “Stories of Strength” honoree.
