Chelsea Alexander:
A Family First
Even though Chelsea is the first member of her family to attend college, she knew from an early age that she wanted to further her education in the post-secondary world. In her words, “There was no other option.” She carries a double major in Sociology and Economics.
Her family is very supportive of her goal to become an educational consultant and researcher, but she needed some financial help to make her dream happen. Because she is a good student, she was accepted to other fine universities, but Hampton was able to offer her a substantial merit scholarship that influenced her decision. And when she visited Hampton she fell in love with the campus. That sealed the deal.
But Hampton’s fund raising efforts positively affect students in more ways than scholarships. Through Hampton’s $20 million commitment to facilities upgrades, the renovation of Virginia-Cleveland Suites had just been completed when Chelsea enrolled and she was delighted to spend her freshman year in the upscale accommodations. And because of Hampton’s $15 million commitment to support faculty enhancements, Chelsea was afforded the opportunity to be mentored by professors like Alfreada Brown-Kelly, who not only convinced her to seek a Ph.D., but will allow her to contribute to future research publications.
“Had it not been for the merit scholarship [from Hampton],” she added, “I would not be here.” Because of that, Chelsea encourages all Hampton alumni to choose an area of interest and GIVE to support it. What better way is there to contribute to the future of a deserving student.
